MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Police Service is once again reminding the public to remove valuables from their vehicles after a rash of break-ins this weekend.

In the early morning hours on Sunday, police responded to multiple thefts from vehicles in the Ross Glen area. Most of the thefts were concentrated in the Ross Glen Crescent area.

Items stolen include wallets, credit cards and some electronics, according to a release from police.

An adult male was arrested in the Somerside area later in the morning.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Sgt. Darlene Garrecht with the Medicine Hat Police Service says the crimes can happen in any area of the city.

“It just happened to be in the Ross Glen neighbourhood and area, but these crimes of opportunity can happen anywhere in the city,” she said.

Garrecht says there are things the public can do to help prevent becoming a victim of theft.

“We want to remind our people to lock your vehicles, and don’t keep anything valuable in plain sight or on the front seat, such as your purse, wallet, credit cards, loose change,” she said. “These are just crimes of opportunity, of people walking the streets.”

Garrecht adds if you have a garage door opener in your car, you should keep it out of sight as well. She adds motorists should also park their vehicles in well-lit or well-travelled areas with many pedestrians while out in the city.

Police say anything with your personal information on it, such as credit cards, should be removed from your vehicle.
