Driver arrested after multiple vehicles hit by cube van in Calgary early Thursday

CALGARY — Calgary police have arrested the driver of a cube van that investigators believe was involved in multiple early morning collisions in the city.

Numerous reports of what appeared to be a rental vehicle being driven erratically started surfacing around 4;30 a.m.

Early morning commuters were being asked to drive with caution and allow emergency vehicles through traffic.

Initial efforts by officers to stop the van were unsuccessful.

Det. Paul Teworte says at least two police vehicles were hit as they tried to stop the van and some officers later needed to be checked at hospital, although none suffered major injuries.

The police tactical unit got involved in the pursuit and the driver was eventually arrested when the van was stopped in a north-central neighbourhood.

There is no immediate word on injuries or damage, but police do not believe the driver was intentionally striking vehicles or trying to harm people.
