MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Mavericks have named their new coach for the 2020 season.

Nolan Rattai, who just finished his college baseball career with the Medicine Hat Mavericks, has been named head coach for the upcoming season. He replaces Tom Vessella, who left the team following one season.

“I’m very excited, I’m very please and grateful for this opportunity,” Rattai said on Friday.

Rattai previously coached the Medicine Hat Majestics in the American Legion league. After ending his playing career, he was hired by owner and general manager Greg Morrison as assistant GM.

Rattai says he believes leading by example will help him gain respect in his new position.

“Just work ethic, doing everything the right way, working with the guys as a team, working on mental approaches, team atmosphere, just try to guide them in the right direction as a team,” he said.

Morrison says it’s exciting to have a player like Rattai, who developed as a player in Medicine Hat, now leading the team.

“He grew up here, he’s a testament to our grassroots system,” he said. “He’s come up through Little League, American Legion, high school baseball, that you could go away from Medicine Hat, play good college baseball, and come back and be an impact guy who is a three-time All-Star with the Mavericks.”

The Mavericks are currently recruiting players for the 2020 season.
