Rozdeba hits 20 points in first win of season for Rattlers women’s team

CALGARY, AB – The third time was the charm for the Medicine Hat College Rattlers women’s basketball team Saturday, securing their first victory of the 2019-20 season on the road.

A 20-point evening by Kate Rozdeba led the charge for the Rattlers who took down the Ambrose University Lions 76-63 to improve to 1-2 on the season.

Four of MHC’s five starters were able to hit double-digits in points with Tatiana Dutka (17 points), Amer Karamanos (13 points), and Morgan Muir (13 points) each chipping in offensively.

Hailey Neiszner scored all nine of the Rattlers points off the bench going 4-for-6 on the night, while Rozdeba had a game-high 15 rebounds in the win.

Rozdeba also had a team-high 17 points in MHC’s home opener loss to Lethbridge College, falling by a 67-61 score thanks to a 29-point performance by Kodiaks star Denajha Kie.

With three games under their belt, the Rattlers women’s team is sixth in the ACAC South Division but are tied in points with Olds College and Red Deer College.

Shooting troubles plagued the Rattlers men’s squad in the late game however, as they were blown out on the road against the Lions 105-66.

MHC trailed by 10 points after just the opening five minutes, later falling behind 56-32 at halftime.

Kieron Burgess was the lone Rattler to score over 12 points on the night with 29 points and seven rebounds, followed by an 11-point night off the bench by Jevon Fray-Woodbine.

Ambrose University was able to knock down 13 shots from beyond the arc on Saturday as well, compared to the Rattlers going 5-for-20 from three-point land.

The loss marks the second loss in a row for the Rattlers men’s team after losing 92-80 to the Kodiaks in their home opener, now sitting fifth in the South Division with a 1-2 record.

Rattlers basketball teams will head to Saskatchewan for their lone games next weekend, facing the Briercrest Clippers for a two-game set on Friday night.

Swept in Saskatchewan

Life across the provincial border wasn’t too kind for the Rattlers volleyball teams over the weekend, as they fell in all four of their games to Briercrest.

After being swept on Friday night, MHC’s men’s volleyball team was able to steal a set on Saturday by still lost a four-set tilt (22-25, 25-11, 25-15, 25-13) to the Clippers.

MHC came out of the gates with a strong start to jump ahead 1-0 after a first set victory, but Briercrest was able to rally for three straight sets to take the rematch.

KeAndre Evans continued his strong sophomore campaign with 11 kills and four digs in the loss, while Jovan Stepanovic recorded seven kills and 11 digs of his own for the Rattlers.

After winning their season opener last weekend, the Rattlers men’s program has lost three straight and have slipped to fifth place in their division at 1-3.

As for the Rattlers women’s volleyball team, they are still in search of their first victory of 2019-20 after a pair of three-set losses to the Clippers over the weekend including a 25-19, 25-20, 25-21 defeat on Saturday.

Amber Stigter (six) and Megan Hoeber (five) were the only Rattlers to register at least five kills in the loss, while libero Shaya Suchy had a game-high 15 digs defensively.

Rookie Sarah Singular meanwhile was named Rattlers player of the game, capping off her weekend with four kills, six digs, and a pair of blocks against the Clippers.

Riding a four-game winless streak to open the season, the MHC ladies sit at the bottom of the South Division table in seventh place.

On Friday night the Rattlers volleyball teams will try to bounce back at home, kicking off weekend home-and-home series against the SAIT Trojans with games at 6:00 and 8:00 pm.
