REDCLIFF, AB — Two pieces of Medicine Hat history are hitting the auction block on Saturday.

Two fire trucks, a ladder truck from 1949 and a pumper truck from 1941, will be auctioned off at Gateway Auctions in Redcliff on Saturday.

Gordon Musgraves, the co-owner of the auction house, says the two trucks are filled with history and stories, and since they’ve arrived on the lot a month ago, it has attracted a lot of interest for the public.

“there have been a number of people who have inquired about them, stopped by and looked at them, and we’re pretty optimistic we’ll find new homes for them, and good homes, we hope,” he said.

According for Fire Chief Brian Stauth, the pumper truck was used by the department until the 1960s, while the ladder truck remained in service until the 1980s.

Stauth says the Fire Service had plans to restore the trucks for use in parades, but budget and storage issues led to them deciding to sell the trucks.

“These two have just sat in storage as excess inventory,” he said. “We don’t have storage anymore. Station 1 on Maple Avenue is going up for sale, so we have to divest of these units.”

Stauth adds he is hoping the trucks will go to collectors who will appreciate them.

“They’re quite unique vehicles, and certainly, they wouldn’t take a tremendous amount of restorative work to be a really interesting piece of a collection,” he said.

Added Musgraves, “They’re in extremely good condition, they’re all fully equipped still, and they’re just neat items, they’re a very unique item and very interesting to see.”

The auction will take place at 10 a.m. at Gateway Auctions in Redcliff (1401 Dirkson Drive Northeast). Bids on the trucks will begin at 2 p.m.
