Four charged following turkey farm protest in southern Alberta

FORT MACLEOD, AB —Four people, including a youth, have been charged in connection with a protest on a turkey farm near Fort MacLeod in September.

The charges were announced Wednesday morning in an RCMP news release. Maxwell Ming Mah, 46, of Edmonton, Claire Buchanan, 28, of Calgary, Kennadi Rae Herbert, 24, of Pincher Creek and a 16-year-old female from Calgary have all be charged with one count of break and enter to commit mischief.

RCMP were dispatched to the Jumbo Valley Hutterite Turkey Farm outside of Fort MacLeod on the morning of September 2 after receiving reports of a large gathering of people protesting on the farm and the adjacent highway.

When officers arrived, they found several people who had allegedly entered the barn unlawfully. The situation was resolved peacefully with the land owner and protesters, with all of the protesters leaving the farm by 12:15 p.m.

All four charged have been released from custody. The three adults are scheduled to appear in Fort MacLeod Provincial Court on November 27, while the youth will appear on November 15.
