Meet the Candidates: Cypress Hills-Grasslands

SWIFT CURRENT, SASK. — The riding of Cypress Hills- Grasslands is named after the two provincial parks in the area. It’s a largely rural riding, with Swift Current being the only city in its boundaries.

The riding also includes Maple Creek, Assiniboia, Shaunavon, Elrose, Gravelbourg, Chaplin and Kindersley.

The riding will have a new Member of Parliament, after incumbent MP David Anderson announced he will not be seeking re-election. Anderson had been representing the riding since 2000, first as a member of the Canadian Alliance (2000-2003) and then representing the Conservative Party of Canada.

Here are the candidates for the 2019 election.

William Caton, Liberal Party Candidate for Cypress Hills-Grasslands (Liberal Party of Canada)

William Caton – Liberal Party of Canada

William Caton is representing the Liberal Party of Canada in the election. The Kindersley Social says he is third generation cattle rancher in the area. In 2015, he ran for the Green Party of Canada.

Bill Clary – Green Party of Canada candidate for Cypress Hills-Grasslands

Bill Clary – Green Party of Canada

Clary has previously represented the Green Party in the riding in the 2008 federal election, and ran against Ralph Goodale in the 2011 election in the Regina-Wascana riding. He was previously a councillor for the Town of Leader. His candidate biography says he previously worked as a transit operator in British Columbia, and currently is semi-retired and works as a farm hand in Leader.

Lee Harding – People’s Party of Canada candidate for Cypress Hills-Grasslands

Lee Harding – People’s Party of Canada

Harding is a former journalist, who worked for CBC, CTV and Global News. He also worked as the Saskatchewan Director for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation and was the parliamentary assistant to David Anderson. Prior to the election, he was working for the Frontier Centre for Public Policy. He lives in Swift Current.

Maria Lewans – Independent Candidate (Kindersley Today)

Maria Lewans – Independent

Lewans runs a plumbing company in Swift Current, according to Kindersley Today. She previously represented the Green Party in the Saskatchewan Provincial Election in 2018, and previously ran for mayor of Swift Current in 2016.

According to his candidate biography, Patzer worked for SaskTel for 10 years, and has been involved with the Conservative Party in the riding for many years. He lives in Swift Current with his wife and three children.

Trevor Peterson – NDP candidate for Cypress Hills-Grasslands

Trevor Peterson – NDP

A longtime resident of rural Saskatchewan, Peterson is a high school teacher in the community of Assiniboia. He is married and has two children, and according to his biography, has volunteered as a coach, referee and organizer for team sports in the region.
