Meet the Candidates – Bow River

BROOKS, AB — The current Bow River riding was created in 2012, following a redistribution of parts of the former Crowfoot, Medicine Hat and Macleod ridings.

The riding serves the cities of Chestermere and Brooks, along with the towns of Bassano, Taber, Strathmore and Vulcan, and other rural communities.

The Conservative Party won the riding handily in the 2015 election, receiving 77 per cent of the vote.

Here are the candidates for the riding for the election.

Martin Shields, Conservative Party of Canada

Martin Shields is seeking his second term in office as the Member of Parliament for the riding of Bow River.

A resident of Brooks for 35 years, He was involved in government at the municipal level since 2004, and was elected Mayor of Brooks in 2007, a position he held until he was elected MP.

Prior to entering politics, Shields served as a teacher and school administrator for 30 years, and was a part-time University instructor for 20 years.

Margaret Rhemtulla – Liberal Party

Margaret Rhemtulla will represent the Liberal Party. A biography was not available on the Liberal Party’s website, but according to Dave Cournoyer with daveberta.ca, an Alberta politics blog, Rhemtulla serves as the policy chair for the Alberta wing of the Liberal Party of Canada.

Hendrika Maria Tuithof de Jonge (Green Party of Canada) – Bow River

Hendrika Maria Tuithof de Jonge – Green Party of Canada

Hendrika Maria Tuithof de Jonge is representing the Green Party in the federal election.

According to her biography on the party’s website, she is president of her family business, which operates a small campground for Alberta Parks. She has also worked as the Manager of Communication and Public Relations for the Chamber of Commerce and the Dutch Centre for Health Promotion and Education, and as a self-employed editor. She is also working towards a Bachelor of Social Work degree at the University of Calgary.

Lynn MacWilliam – NDP

Lynn MacWilliam will once again represent the NDP in the Bow River riding. She previously represented the party in Bow River in 2015, finishing in third place. MacWilliam also ran in the Brooks-Medicine Hat riding in the 2019 provincial election for the NDP, finishing in a distant second place.

MacWilliam was formerly a councillor with the Town of Bassano, and has been involved with the NDP for many years at both the provincial and federal level.

Tom Ikert – People’s Party of Canada

A long-time resident of Wheatland County, Ikert is a Red Seal Journeyman Carpenter and lifelong entrepreneur, according to his official campaign website. Ikert says he is passionate about hard work, integrity and responsibility.

Tom Lipp – Christian Heritage Party

Tom Lipp – Christian Heritage Party of Canada

Lipp has lived in the Bow River riding for 16 years, and works as a personal financial planner and advisor. He and his wife, Priscilla, have 10 children.
