Family Leisure Centre reopens to public following leak Tuesday morning

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The public now has access to the Family Leisure Centre, following an incident Tuesday morning.

According to the Medicine Hat Fire Service Deputy Fire Chief Lance Purcell, there was a small ammonia leak in a compressor bay in the facility.

As a result, city staff and fire officials evacuated those they could to the Field House.

Purcell says that some other patrons, like pool users, were sheltered inside the facility, and restricted any access to the building.

Although Purcell says it was just a small leak, it’s an alarm they take very seriously.

“We can go back to Fernie. Fernie had quite a significant incident. So it can create a hazard. But that’s why the systems are in place. The automatic systems worked as designed and the staff worked as designed,” Purcell said.

Patrons were able to return to activities in the building within the hour.

No injuries were reported.
