Vikings, Mohawks cap off Rangeland 40th anniversary celebration with victories

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The regular season finale for Rangeland Football Conference play was a historic one at the Methanex Bowl on Friday night, celebrating four decades in Medicine Hat.

Players and alumni from the Medicine Hat High Mohawks, Monsignor McCoy-Eagle Butte Colts, Crescent Heights Vikings, and Brooks Buffalos gathered for 40th anniversary celebrations of the league ahead of a pair of conference games.

Former players were honoured before opening kick-off, while current high school athletes donned retro jerseys in their final games of the regular season.

The Vikings were able to make the most out of the early game earning a 25-20 victory over the Colts to enter playoffs with a 2-1 record in league play.

Crescent Heights also clinched second place in the regular season standings, while the 1-2 Colts will walk into the post-season with the third seed.

As for the Mohawks, they capped off a perfect regular season with a 32-9 win against Brooks to cap of the season with a 3-0 record in RFC action.

Ranked sixth in the province for Tier II programs, the Mohawks sit tops in the conference heading into playoffs with Brooks taking fourth place.

Exhibition games continue next week for local schools with the Mohawks hosting Chinook and Crescent Heights on the road against George McDougall on Thursday.

As for the Colts, they welcome Fort McMurray to town next Saturday for an exhibition tilt before the post-season.

The first round of RFC playoffs will be held on October 18 at the Methanex Bowl with Hat High battling Brooks and Crescent Heights facing off against McCoy.
