ASM Global new managers of Canalta Centre

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Canalta Centre is now running under a new management company following a recent merger.

SMG, which was contracted by the City of Medicine Hat to run the Canalta Centre when it opened in 2015, recently merged with AEG Facilities to create ASM Global, which will manage the arena going forward.

The Canalta Centre is listed in ASM Global’s portfolio of properties on its website.

The merger between the two companies was originally announced in February, but became official on Tuesday.

“For the Canalta Centre, it just means greater depth of talent, greater depth of experience, as these two industry leaders get together,” said Tammy Sweeney, general manager of the Canalta Centre. “There’s 310 buildings worldwide that ASM now manages. The greatest, best facilities in the world are now managed by this huge company…there are 61,000 employees, so when we need to tap into either a system, a process, different expertise for an event, or a building that has done an event to figure out ‘could this work here?’

“There’s a great depth of talent pool, experience sharing, process sharing, all of that. So that will only help our building.”

In addition to the Canalta Centre, ASM manages the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, the Staples Centre in Los Angeles and the Leon’s Centre in Kingston, Ontario, along with stadiums such as NRG Stadium in Houston and the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.

Sweeney, however, says the partnership won’t automatically lead to larger shows coming to Medicine Hat.

“I think the market still is what the market is,” she said. “Whether we have more talent or skill on the building side, (it’s) less reflection of the type of shows we’ll get in market here. The types of shows coming into market here really depend on this market, and they depend on how well shows have done in the past.”

The contract SMG signed with the City of Medicine Hat is still in place following the merger, Sweeney says. It is set to expire in August next year.
