Andreescu returns to action with newfound fame after U.S. Open title
Tracy Austin didn’t experience the same level of fanfare after winning the 1979 U.S. Open that Bianca Andreescu did for her history-making victory at Flushing Meadows this year.
But the former World No. 1 and three-time Grand Slam champion knows what it’s like to be a teenage tennis star — and how life can change instantly following a major title.
Austin won her first U.S. Open as a 16-year-old four decades ago, beating then-No. 1 Chris Evert in straight sets, and won again in New York two years later at 18 against Martina Navratilova.
“There’s (your life) before you win your first major and (your life) after you win your first major. And it’s pretty special,” Austin, now a tennis broadcaster, said in a phone interview with The Canadian Press from her California home. “People know who you are, there are obviously more expectations.
