MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Crescent Heights High School Vikings are hoping to make another run towards volleyball provincials this season.

With a new season only a few weeks old, the senior varsity girls volleyball team are already setting the pace, capturing a silver medal at a tournament in Brooks two weeks ago and a bronze medal in Calgary last weekend.

All four local teams in the senior girls ranks are all poised for a strong season. During the Calgary tournament, the Medicine Hat High School Kwahommies, the Monsignor McCoy High School Colts and the Eagle Butte High School Talons all made it to the semi-finals, with the Colts defeating the Talons in the final (the Vikings defeated Hat High for the bronze).

“It’s been a good start to the year, it’s early, we’re still developing and learning, and it’s exciting for the potential we have,” said Scott Galloway, head coach of the Vikings.

He added, “I have a fantastic group of girls. I’ve got girls who love being in the gym, love practising, the energy level is just high-intensity at practice. I’m very excited to see us continue to develop throughout the year.”

Julia Forsyth, one of the Grade 12 players on the team, says the team has a lot of talent, and is excited for what the season will bring.

“It’s great to see the competition in Medicine Hat,” she said. “We’re up there, we’re obviously one of the top teams as well. We’re just excited to see where we can go.”

The Vikings are hosting their annual tournament this weekend, with 20 teams participating in both the junior and senior varsity ranks, which runs through the weekend.
