LETHBRIDGE, AB – 26 people and organizations were celebrated by Canadian Blood Services this week for their efforts to help get more people involved.

Bernadine and Toby Boulet are the parents of Logan Boulet, one of the Humboldt Broncos’ hockey players who were killed in a bus crash in April 2018.

Logan chose to become an organ donor shortly before his passing, which inspired his parents to champion the cause.

Partly due to what has been dubbed “The Logan Boulet Effect”, more than 100,000 Canadians registered to become organ donors just one month after his death. As of April 2019, Canadian Blood Services confirmed that this number reached over 300,000.

“The fact that they recognized The Logan Boulet Effect as being a major contributor to the recruitment of new organ donors in Canada, it makes it nice. I don’t know what else to use other than the word nice,” says Toby Boulet.

Bernadine adds that they taught their son that it was always better to do something than to do nothing, so when Logan’s time came, they felt they had no choice but to try to make the world a better place.

Toby added onto that thought.

“It just makes us feel good that we’re able to take something from this national tragedy and turn it into something good. All the families are working hard in their own communities to make something good happen in their communities. I guess we’re happy that we can do our part to make things better.”

The other local award recipient was Lethbridge College.

For over a decade, staff and students have donated nearly 3,000 units of blood and have continually promoted Canadian Blood Services at no cost.
