Rattlers women’s golf team captures first gold of 2019 season

CALGARY, AB – It was close in the end, but the Medicine Hat College Rattlers women’s golf team leaves Calgary on Sunday with an ACAC South Regional golf championship.

MHC’s trio of Nicole Schultz, Sierra Zukowski, and Ciara Bonogofski combined to shoot 47 over par in the women’s team event at Valley Ridge Golf Club, beating the Concordia University Thunder by to strokes.

The Rattlers were able to send two of those golfers to the podium in the women’s individual event as well, with Schultz earning her second silver medal in as many weeks.

Schultz shot rounds of 82 and 85 over the weekend, ending her tournament at 23-over to finish four shots back of Concordia’s Kennedy Turcotte for first place.

Zukowski had a chance at tying Schultz for the ACAC South silver medal, however she bogeyed the 18^th hole and finished one shot behind her teammate to leave Calgary with the bronze medal.

It was a 15^th place finish for Bonogofski in the individual tournament meanwhile, ending her weekend at 78 over par after shooting an 116 on Sunday.

Chase Broderson was the top finisher for the Rattlers men’s team, coming in at seven over par on Sunday to finish eight shots off the pace at 10-over and an eighth place showing.

Rookie Caleb Kinch wasn’t too far behind Broderson as he tied for 12^th place after shooting an 11-over, 83 in his final round to wrap up the weekend at 15 over par.

Derek Whitson posted back-to-back scores of 81 in Calgary to end up tied for 16^th at 18-over, while Rattlers top male at ACAC North Regionals Mathieu Chapdelaine had a tough Sunday carding an 85 to wind up in 20^th place.

It was a 22^nd place showing from Kent Lesko with a Sunday score of 88, Brady Resch was four shots behind him and earned a 26^th place finish, while Logan Crawford closed out the Rattlers contingent at 32 over par and wrapped up his weekend tied for 30^th place.

The Rattlers men’s golf squad finished just off the podium in the team event in fourth place, unable to replicate their bronze medal performance in Edmonton.

After seeing the ACAC North title slip out of his grasp last weekend, University of Alberta-Augustana’s Michael Harrison shot a 74 on Sunday to win the ACAC South crown by a single stroke over SAIT’s Cole Keebler.

Rattlers golfers will go for provincial glory next weekend, with the 2019 ACAC Men’s and Women’s Golf Championship beginning on Friday at Coal Creek Golf Course outside of Edmonton.
