Police Point Park celebrating World Rivers Day

Medicine Hat, AB – The Police Point Park Interpretive Centre is hosting an evening walk and campfire this Sunday to celebrate World Rivers Day and the re-opening of the west access trail.

World Rivers Day was started in British Columbia in 2005 to celebrate rivers and improve the upkeep of them.

According to the organization’s website, they now have events in over 70 countries on the fourth Sunday of September.

Marty Drut, park interpreter, says it’s important for Medicine Hat to be a part of the day with the role the South Saskatchewan plays in the city.

“It’s one of the most important landscape features we have in our area. It provides water for all kinds of things. It adds beauty to our area. And a lot of things that live here couldn’t survive without the water. It’s pretty important.” He said.

The event starts at 7 p.m. and will be lead by chief park interpreter Corlaine Gardner.

“She’s going to be taking people on a walk along the west access trail, going out of the park. This trail had been closed for a number of years because the city was upgrading sewer lines and lift stations over there. It just reopened at the end of July, so we want to get people on that trail and make everyone aware it’s re-open” He continued. “And then come back and have a little campfire here at the Nature Centre and maybe even roast some marshmallows.”

Drut says this was the perfect kind of event to bring awareness to the reopening of the trail.

“It’s got some beautiful views of the river valley along that path.”

The event on Sunday is open for all to take part in and is free.

Drut says if anyone has questions to call the Nature Centre at 403-529-6225.
