Riverview Golf Club recovering from financial crisis

REDCLIFF, AB — The Riverview Golf Club is recovering after nearly facing financial ruin last year.

Bill Duncan, one of the board members with the golf club says a great season has given the club the support it needs to keep on operating.

“We’ve had a good year, we’ve had lots of support from members, support from the town, players have been coming out on a really regular basis,” says Duncan. “We’re very happy with how things have gone so far.”

In October 2018, the golf club released they were facing more than $400,000 in short-term debt. They soon made an appeal to the Town of Redcliff, asking for a $315,000 dollar loan.

The board says they’ve successfully paid off all of their debt incurred in past years, and are now working to pay off the loan from the Town.

“We were able to pay off all of our debt that was incurred. So anything we have that’s outstanding is current, from this year. We are financially in very good shape right now,” says Duncan. “The loan is still in place, and that loan will be paid off as per the payment plan that was established.”

2019 membership numbers are consistent with past years, and general manager Doug Braithwaite says locals have gone above and beyond to support course this season by volunteering and regularly golfing.

“We have a lot of volunteers that want to make sure the golf course is a complete success,” he says. “That’s the thing with Redcliff golf course, our members are great and they pick up the pieces where they need to be.”

Duncan says membership numbers may increase next season.

“From what we know, the members that chose to go elsewhere are now going to reconsider and come back to us next year which will bring us a few more in,” he says.

Braithwaite says the high-quality service the golf course offers will keep members coming out in consistent numbers, and help keep the course alive for years to come.

“We want to make sure people enjoy themselves out here. I think that’s what brings a lot of people out is that we have a positive attitude, we have really good staff, good board members, good membership,” he says. “Just people coming out and enjoying themselves at the golf course is what we want.”

Riverview Golf Club’s season ends at the end of October, weather permitting.
