Flu shot bookings begin in Medicine Hat

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Alberta’s flu season is approaching, and local parents have been busy pre-booking their children’s flu shots.

Many of those bookings are thanks to a text message sent out across Southern Alberta, asking parents with children under five and above six months old to book their appointment.

Those appointments are for an early outreach flu shot clinic being held in Medicine Hat. The clinic is already 80 per cent full.

However, according to Alberta Health, parents who haven’t booked will still have many opportunities to vaccinate their children.

Public clinics begin the week of October 21, and some local pharmacies and physicians will have the vaccine in early October.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw says parents should make it a priority to vaccinate their children, because they can be at a higher risk for severe reactions.

“Influenza every year can cause serious illness and in the worst cases death in people in our province,” she says. “That tends to be seen more for those at highest risk so those who are the oldest in our population and the youngest.”

The times and locations of all public flu shot clinics will be available on the Alberta Health Services website on October 1.
