MHC offering high school students help with their homework for free

Medicine Hat, AB- Every high school student has experienced some kind of stress over homework.

Whether that be from a simple assignment or preparation for an exam.

That’s why the Medicine Hat College is hoping more of those students take advantage of what they call ‘the best secret in town’ by coming to them for help with their work.

The “basic homework drop-in” is a free twice-weekly program the college has been running for a number of years.

Erin Penzes, the college’s interim dean of arts, education, and business says its a place where junior and senior high school students can get help from college instructors with their core subjects.

“When they come, there are teachers who teach in our program. So we have English and socials teachers. We have math and science teachers as well.” She continued. “Our teachers are actually college preparation teachers too. So they are familiar with their curriculum and they know what the students are up against in terms of things exams and diplomas.”

As well as working the actual homework, Penzes says the students are learning key study skills and becoming more comfortable on a post-secondary campus.

“I would love to think they would be comfortable coming here, so it’s not such an intimidating place when they walked in. And they were comfortable, so they know where to go and they know how to get upstairs in the library. It’s not a random thought, it’s something they are familiar with.” She said.

The drop-in program runs on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in room B307 above the library.
