Sahara desert trek just two months away for local woman

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A local woman is just two months away from flying to the other side of the earth to trek across the Sahara desert.

Sarah Mackenzie will endure the five-day, 100 kilometre walk to raise money for charity.

Mackenzie will be joining a team of 120 fellow Royal Lepage employees in Canada to raise money for the local women’s shelter and other domestic violence foundations.

She’ll be in a group of about 20 other people, all carrying their supplies and tenting each night in the desert. Mackenzie is one of six Albertans going on the trip, and the only one from Medicine Hat.

The Sahara Desert is one of the hottest and driest regions in the world, so since January, she’s been training with Temple Fitness to get into shape.

As of now, Mackenzie has raised $3200 of her $10,000 goal for the trip.

“I’m hoping that with these fundraisers and a few last minute pushes hat by November I’ve hit my goal if not exceeded it,” she says.

Those last minute pushes include a silent auction fundraisers, and a fundraising event at Hell’s Basement on September 7.

“They brought my in and I got to make this cool ‘Sarah in the Sahara’ lager. It’s going to be a kind of come and go event where two dollars of each pint of the Sarah in the Sahara beer goes towards the women’s shelter and one dollar from all other pints goes towards the cause as well,” she says.

With the trip scheduled for November 16, she says it’s been an emotional time getting ready for the adventure.

“I’m pretty emotional, there’s nights where I’m stressed out and I don’t know if I can do it and anxious, then there’s other days where I’m like I just can’t wait to go and see what its like and push myself.”
