Medicine Hat students excited to head back to school

Medicine Hat, AB – With the calendar officially turning over to September, students are once again filling the halls of Medicine Hat’s schools

“I’m pretty pumped. You know it’s good to be back after summer” Said grade 11 Crescent Heights High School student Devett Douglas.

His classmate Hunter Girard-Chelle agreed.

“We’re all going to miss summer. Hot days. Out working or just being out with your friends. But schools not bad for that.” He said. “You can defiantly make some good friends there. And then when summer comes around next year you’ve got some people to hang out with.”

Although Girard-Chelle is sad to see summer go, he’s excited to see what the year holds.

“I’m taking a lot of art classes this year. So hopefully I can get somewhere with my art or something like that. That would be nice for sure.” He said.

For another grade 11 student, Caeden Shaw, he’s looking forward to getting a routine back.

“Don’t get me wrong summer is fun and all, but I’ve been playing this one video game nonstop and I’m kind of on that burnout phase of it.” Shaw laughed. “And so being back to school it gives me a routine.”

Grade 9 students, Wyatt Iverson and Ryan Belcastro, say they’re most looking forward to being with their friends.

“I have connections with them that I have with nobody else.” Belcastro described.

All five students had immediate answers when asked about what makes school important.

“Because it gives you an education. Without that, you really aren’t going to do much in life.” Iverson said.

Douglas agreed.

“Without an education, how are you going to prepare for a job.” He said.

Girard-Chelle said it’s more than just future employment skills though.

“It teaches us skills on how to interact with community members, co-workers, bosses, depending on the situations.” Said Girard-Chelle. “And being able to make those connections and friendships that we hopefully can cherish for the rest of our lives.”

With these students back to classes, the Medicine Hat Police are reminding drivers to slow to 30 km/h in school zones

As well they are asking parents to be aware of proper parking spaces and loading zones.
