MEDICINE HAT, AB — A former broadcaster who pleaded guilty to robbing two banks in a case which made national headlines will have to wait until October to learn his sentence.

Stephen Vogelsang, 55, briefly appeared via CCTV in Medicine Hat Provincial Court Monday morning, where he was expected to be sentenced on two charges of robbery.

Vogelsang pleaded guilty in April to two counts of robbery. He was arrested in Medicine Hat in October 2017 after a RBC Branch and BMO branch in the city were robbed within two days of each other.

He was also charged in connection with four robberies in Saskatchewan which occurred between July and October 2017.

Vogelsang was best known as a sports anchor and news director for CKY News in Winnipeg. He was also a journalism instructor at Red River College.

During his appearance, Vogelsang apologized to the bank staff involved in both Medicine Hat robberies. He also also apologized to his family and friends for “causing embarrassment” and apologized to his former students.

In April, Vogelsang pleaded guilty to four counts of robbery in Saskatchewan, and two counts of robbery in Medicine Hat.

For the charges in Saskatchewan, he received a five-year sentence, but with credit for pre-trial custody, he still has three years left on his sentence.

Crown prosecutors in Alberta are looking for a three year sentence, which would be served consecutively with his Saskatchewan sentence.

Greg White, Vogelsang’s lawyer, is asking for a five year sentence, with credit for 33 months of pre-trial custody, which would be served concurrently.

The judge will hand down his decision on October 8 at 1 p.m.
