FINDING HER PASSION

‘Sport gave me my life back’: Sarah Mickey going for gold at Para Pan Am Games

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Growing up in Redcliff, Sarah Mickey had the world at her fingertips.

She was a talented figure skater, competing among the best in Canada. But her life took a sudden turn after she was diagnosed with Lyme disease six years ago.

An auto-immune condition stemming from the disease left her paralyzed from the waist down, and her career on the ice ended.

Fast forward to where we are today, and she’s discovered a new passion — one which gave her back her life.

Mickey is among the best seated-discus throwers in the world, and is wearing Canada’s colours at the Para Pan-Am Games in Lima, Peru.

She booked her ticket by throwing a national-record 21.30-meters at a meet in Lethbridge earlier this year. Last month, she captured silver at the national championships in Montreal, reinforcing her place as one of Canada’s best.

The 21-year-old will throw for gold in the F55 category next Tuesday, in hopes of adding another gold medal to her mantel.

Mitch Bach of CHAT Sports caught up with Mickey before she flew out to hear more about her career in seated-discus, her career highlights, and what means to represent Canada on the international stage.
