CEREAL, AB — Highway 9 at Range Road 72 has reopened for travellers more than 24 hours following a multi-vehicle collision which left three people dead and injured 10 others.

According to a release from the RCMP, the affected section of the highway reopened at 8 p.m. Wednesday evening.

“All work necessary to clean the highway and prepare it for vehicle use has been completed,” the release reads.

The section of highway was the scene of a collision Tuesday afternoon involving three semi trucks and seven passenger vehicles. One of the trucks was carrying butane, while another was carrying fuel, which ignited and caused several vehicles to catch fire.

Crews spent hours cleaning the scene and safely removing hazardous material on the highway before reopening it.

Of the 10 injured, two were injured critically. There have been no further updates on those injured.

RCMP continue to investigate the collision. The province’s Ministry of Transportation will also be conducting their own investigation.
