MEDICINE HAT, AB — Medicine Hat High School has one of the most well-established athletic departments in Western Canada, much in part to it’s state-of-the-art training facilities.

A 200-foot college-caliber gymnasium, retractable sports equipment from the roof, a football clubhouse which rivals the best university models in Canada. The list goes on.

And soon, the final component to the school’s master athletics re-development, is about to cut the ribbon.

Construction on the final phase of Hat High’s track is underway, scheduled for an opening of September 30.

The design involves carving out the south-side wall above the gymnasium, and installing beams to support the final leg of the track. This stretch will literally hang outside the school, and look out towards 7th Street.

On top of the track renovations, Hat High is also installing artificial turf, which will be used for a variety of sports including golf, football and archery.

Mitch Bach of CHAT Sports caught up with track and field coaches Glen Mori and Darren Klein, along with vice-president and coach Scott Howes to hear their thoughts on the design, and how it can improve the student-athlete experience at Hat High.
