FIRE BAN STILL IN PLACE

Wet conditions provide temporary relief for Cypress County fires

CYPRESS COUNTY, AB — After a month that only consisted of 5 millimetres of rainfall, some moisture has finally hit the Medicine Hat area.

A relief for Cypress County, which has been dealing with grass fires for weeks.

Following the weekend of rainfall, there’s no longer any grass fires burning, and officials are no longer on scene of the Graburn grass fire.

However, the County-wide fire ban issued two weeks ago will remain in place despite the wet conditions.

According to Cypress County Fire Chief Kelly Meyer, the moisture has to soak into the ground much further to justify cancelling the ban.

“With this precipitation that’s been happening, it’s been helping out quite a bit but the saturation into the ground, it’s still really dry down below,” he says.

However, he adds residents should still take precautions to prevent any fires.

“Just use caution, even though were in a fire ban right now don’t be lighting or burning barrels, just be very very cautious,” he says. “Let this moisture take its time, let us take our time making sure the moisture conditions are right to lift the ban.”
