REDCLIFF, AB — Redcliff RCMP have revealed more information about the extent of injuries suffered by an American cyclist following an alleged hit-and-run incident earlier this month.

According to Corporal Shane Ryan with Redcliff RCMP, plans are in the works to transfer the cyclist back to his home in the United States to be closer to family.

Ryan says the cyclist, who was in a coma since the collision, recently opened his eyes, but is not currently able to speak and cannot recognize anyone.

The alleged incident occurred sometime in the evening on July 8 on the Trans-Canada Highway just outside of Medicine Hat. A passing motorist found the cyclist injured in a ditch.

The cyclist was rushed to hospital in what RCMP called “life-threatening condition,” and was later airlifted to Calgary hospital.

Daniel Leger of Medicine Hat was later charged by Redcliff RCMP with one count of Failing to Stop After an Accident which resulted in Bodily Harm.

The 34-year-old is scheduled to appear in court on August 7.
