MEDICINE HAT, AB — A pilot flying a plane owned by Super T Aviation was involved in a small crash near Hanna Tuesday morning, but has since been released from hospital.

The crash occurred at the Hanna Municipal Airport.

Sgt. Trent Sperlie with the Hanna RCMP detachment says the male pilot of the plane was attempting to land at the time of the crash.

“What had happened was the plane was approaching the airport here, and was going to land, and on final approach, he had determined his approach was off,” he said. “He was going to pull up and go around, but when he pulled up, the aircraft stalled, and slammed into the ground, and it actually burst into flames when it hit the ground.”

RCMP, firefighters and EMS all responded to the scene.

The pilot was the lone occupant of the plane at the time. He was taken to hospital with what RCMP called non life-threatening injuries. He was released from hospital on Tuesday.

Terri Super, owner of Super T Aviation says they’re thankful the pilot survived the crash.

“The airplane can be replaced, you can’t replace people,” she said. “It’s very fortunate for him and everyone concerned that he was able to basically walk away from the accident. He was the one that notified NAV Canada through their FIC (Flight Information Centre) number.”

The Transportation Safety Board and the Department of National Defence were also called in to investigate.

RCMP say the crash is non-criminal in nature, and the plane was removed from the scene later on Tuesday.
