MEDICINE HAT, AB — Medicine Hat Police Service have released more information about a three vehicle collision that sent two people to hospital and caused detours on Dunmore Road Friday afternoon.

According to the Medicine Hat Police Service, at approximately 11:40 a.m., a white Buick Century was allegedly observed driving erratically in the area of Prince Street southeast. The vehicle was allegedly driving at low speeds, and the driver, a 58-year-old woman, appeared not to notice police, who attempted to pull over the vehicle.

Police monitored the vehicle as it travelled on Allowance Avenue, and discontinued the use of emergency equipment in order to reduce the potential of harm to the public. The vehicle allegedly crossed the median and drove on the wrong side of the road near the intersection at Kingsway Avenue and Dunmore Road. It eventually moved into the correct lane and went up Dunmore Road, where it collided with a Medicine Hat Handi-Transit bus at the 22nd Street intersection.

The collision pushed the bus into a Ford SUV on 22nd Street Southeast, causing minor damage to the driver’s side.

The Buick ignited following the collision, with all available police officers and bystanders attempting to get the woman out of the vehicle. Firefighters were able to remove the driver.

The 58 year old driver was taken to hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

Three members of the Medicine Hat Police Service were treated for smoke inhalation.

The driver of the bus was the only one on board at the time of the collision, and was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Two adults and two children were in the SUV at the time and were not injured.

The investigation into the collision is ongoing.
