Standards set at Night One of Stampede Rodeo

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The times to beat have been set at the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede Rodeo.

The first night of action kicked off at the Stampede Grandstand Thursday night.

The rodeo kicked off with bareback riding, which saw Orin Larsen of Inglis, Manitoba finish in first place. Larsen finished with a score of 86.5 points, riding a horse named After All.

Larsen finished half a point ahead of Kody Lamb, who scored 86.

Matt Richardson is currently leading in steer wrestling with a time of 4.9 seconds, just narrowly ahead of Craig Weisgerber, who finished with an even five seconds.

In the saddle bronc category, Kole Ashbacher of Arrowwood, Alberta is at the top of the leaderboard heading into Friday. Riding Copper Cat, Ashbacher scored 84.5 points. Chance Barass, who came in second place, scored 78.

Only three riders are listed as having a successful ride in the bull ridign event. Edgar Durazo, who is currently the top ranked bull rider on the Canadian tour, is at the top of the leaderboard, earning 82 while riding a bull known as Scorpion. Kyle Brown is in second place with a 79 and Cody Lee Coverchuk scored a 77.5.

The British Columbia duo of Mike Beers and Chad Evanson set the time to bear in team roping, finishing in 5.6 seconds. Bobby Louis and Daniel Kaiser sit in second place, roping the calf in 5.8 seconds. C

In tie-down roping, Marty Yates sits at the top of the leader board with 7.8 seconds, half a second ahead of Ryan Jarrett.

Stacey Ruzicka of Blufton, Alberta is the leader after day one of Ladies barrel racing. She finished with a time of 17.915 seconds, narrowly ahead of Saskatchewan’s Bertina Olafson, who ran the course in 17.933 seconds. Lynette Brodoway of Brooks sits in third place with a 17.922 second time.

The rodeo continues tonight at 8 p.m.
