Bylaw issues unsightly property order for Dominion Street home

Jul 19, 2019 | 5:44 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Police Service’s municipal bylaw enforcement has issued an unsightly property order for a property on Dominion Street which has a bat infestation.

The order, which was issued on Friday, was completed in collaboration with the Medicine Hat Fire Service, Alberta Health Services and the city’s safety codes department following an inspection.

The unsightly property order will require the owners of the property to cut, remove and control all weeds on the property, remove all dead trees and cut grass. In addition, the property owner needs to take reasonable measures to control the pest infestation on the property, specifically bats, noting they have become “detrimental to surrounding areas and a danger to public safety.”

The actions in the order need to be carrier out by August 21, 2019, though the property owner may appeal the order within 14 days.

According to a news release from police, the property file is not a common one, but the property was causing concerns for neighbours. The release notes there was an excessive amount of bat feces on the property and its spreading to nearby homes. The release says the constant cleaning and the lack of freedom to enjoy their yard in the evenings is detrimental to the neighbouring properties.

The property will be inspected a second time on or after August 21 to determine if more action on the file is required.
