U12 & U14 Thunder qualify for medal round at softball provincials

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Two local softball teams have guaranteed themselves a shot at a provincial medal at home, while the road to gold still remains alive at 2019 provincials.

Both the Medicine Hat U12 and U14 D girls Thunder teams have finished in the top four in their respective tournaments, qualifying for Sunday’s semi-final matchups.

The U14 Thunder wrapped up their round-robin on Saturday afternoon with a 15-4 beatdown on the Fort Saskatchewan Sliders, ending their preliminary action with a 3-1 record.

That has Medicine Hat sitting in second place entering the playoff stage, set to face the undefeated Sylvan Lake Storm at 11:00 am with a berth in the provincial championship on the line.

The U14 division gold and bronze medal games will be played later in the afternoon at the Moose Community Ball Complex at 2:00 pm.

As for the U12 Thunder, they finished with a perfect record in the round-robin after knocking off the Coronation Steelers on Saturday 13-7.

Earning the top seed in their pool, the U12 squad will battle the Innisfail Hawks on Saturday morning in their semi-final tilt.

The winner will advance to the provincial gold medal game at 1:00 pm at the Moose Community Ball Complex, while the bronze medal game will be played at the same time.

As for the U10 Thunder, they finished their round-robin at the Family Leisure Centre with a 1-3 record and did not qualify for the playoff round.

The U19 Thunder also saw their season come to an end on Saturday, dropping a 10-5 decision to the Calgary Adrenaline in Irma in a must-win contest.
