Dawgs hold on to beat Mavericks

OKOTOKS, AB — It took all nine innings, two outs, and the bases loaded for the Okotoks Dawgs to withstand the Medicine Hat Mavericks on Tuesday night.

Kory Longaker connected on a walk-off two-RBI single to lift the Dawgs to a narrow 6-5 victory over the Mavericks at Seaman Stadium.

Adding salt to the wound, the Dawgs late-game rally came after the Mavericks tossed aside the first two batters in the ninth.

The rematch is set for Wednesday night from Athletic Park at 7:05 p.m.

Okotoks took a 3-nothing lead into the third inning when Sal Rodriquez batted in the Mavericks’ first run of the game. Austin Sojka made his way over home thanks to Rodriguez first of two singles on the night.

Sojka and Taylor Wright both batted in runs in the fourth to tie the match at 3-3, but the Dawgs responded in the bottom half with Davis Todosichuk’s RBI-double.

After a scoreless fifth frame, the Mavericks earned their first lead of the game with Wright’s second RBI of the night and PJ Garcia’s lone run.

It appeared the Mavericks would snap the Dawgs four-game winning streak in the ninth, but Okotoks staged an unlikely rally to preserve the streak.

Medicine Hat, fresh off a season-long three-day break for All Star Weekend, has now lost back-to-back games. However, they remain one of the hottest teams in the West Division, winning five of the previous seven.

Okotoks continues to create separation in the West standings, now sporting a daunting 25-6 record and a nine-game lead over the second-place Lethbridge Bulls.

The Mavericks remain in the middle of a tight race for second, sitting fourth in the division but just 2.5 games back of Lethbridge.
