Unemployment rate in Lethbridge- Medicine Hat drops to 6.2 per cent in June

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The region’s unemployment rate went down slightly in June compared to May, according to new numbers released by Statistics Canada Friday morning.

The monthly employment report found the unemployment rate for the Lethbridge-Medicine Hat region now sits at 6.2 per cent, down from 6.5 per cent in May.

Last year at this time, the unemployment rate for the region was 4.9 per cent.

The province’s unemployment rate is down at 6.6 per cent, compared to 6.7 per cent in May. Calgary’s unemployment remains the same at 7.0 per cent 6.8 per cent, while Edmonton increased to 7.0 from 6.8 per cent.

Among other regions in Alberta, the Camrose-Drumheller region, which has the highest unemployment rate in the province, saw its unemployment rate drop in June to 7.2 per cent. In May, the unemployment rate was 8.9 per cent.

The lowest unemployment rate in the province covers Banff, Jasper, Rocky Mountain House, Peace River, Grande Prairie and Athabasca, where it sits at 5.7 per cent.

Across the country, the unemployment rate rose to 5.5 per cent. According to Statistics Canada, a total of 2200 jobs were lost in June.
