Infrastructure repairs continue on First Street

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Drivers who use First Street as part of their regular commute will continue to be detoured throughout the summer.

Crews from the city’s environmental utilities and municipal works departments have been working on sections of the street since June between First Avenue Southwest and Division Avenue.

“We’re just completing work inside the intersection,” said Cody Hyam, a construction superintendent with the city. “The water line is being completed right now through the intersection, sanitary has been connected and pushed through the intersection, and the storm catch basins are what’s left.”

Work began in the same area last year, with city crews replacing gas infrastructure, also resulting in detours.

Hyam says as work is completed, the detour will shift west down the street. He adds crews have been working to make it easier and convenient for drivers going through the neighbourhood.

“It’s very nice to see the acceptance and the understanding from the public,” he said. “This area is a very well-travelled area of the city, and the residents of the city have been very accepting of the project and very understanding. We really appreciate that, especially this has been the second year we’ve been in the area.”

Hyam says the work remains on schedule, and adds if the weather cooperates, the project will be completed in the fall.
