Tyrese Samuel leads Canada to 78-76 win over Latvia at U19 basketball worlds

HERAKLION, Greece — Tyrese Samuel had 22 points, 17 assists and five steals as Canada edged Latvia 78-76 Tuesday at the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup.

Charles Bediako added 19 points and 12 rebounds for Canada, while Karim Mane had 11 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

Arturs Kurucs led Latvia with 22 points, seven assists and six rebounds.

The Canadians finished first in Group B with a 2-1 record and will face Senegal in the round of 16 on Wednesday. Senegal finished fourth in Group A.

A Canadian team featuring R.J. Barrett earned a historic gold medal at the 2017 FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup in Cairo, Egypt. The gold was Canada’s first in an international FIBA competition.

The current U19 team is coming off a silver medal at the 2018 FIBA U18 Americas Championship in St. Catharines, Ont.
