Mavericks blanked by Red Sox in pair of shortened games Wednesday

REGINA, SK – One night after having their game with the Regina Red Sox suspended due to Mother Nature, the Medicine Hat Mavericks were hungry to score some runs in a double-header.

Instead, they were shut out over 13 innings of baseball on Wednesday to lose by 9-0 and 1-0 scores to the Red Sox.

Regina held a 6-0 lead on Tuesday before a thunderstorm brought an early end to the night in the third inning, with the rest of the game continuing the following day.

It stayed a six-run Red Sox lead on Wednesday until the sixth inning, when Riki DeSa got a hold of a Bryce Libke pitch for a two-run shot to make it an 8-0 contest.

Willie Estrada came through in the bottom of the eighth inning with a sacrifice-fly to score DeSa, capping off a nine-run game that spanned over 24 hours.

While Medicine Hat was only able to muster seven hits over the first game, their pitching staff of Brandon Ponticelli, Garrett Nicholson, Libke, and Austin Oulds held Regina to eight hits.

Infielder Nolan Rattai was the only Maverick to post two hits in the loss, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a single and a fielder’s choice.

After a half an hour break, Medicine Hat and Regina hit the diamond at Currie Field once again for a shortened seven-inning tilt to close out the series.

In what ended up being a true pitcher’s duel, the Mavericks were held to just three hits and fell in a tight 1-0 decision.

Regina’s lone run came in the bottom of the first inning, as designated hitter Griffin Keller hit a shallow sacrifice-fly to Medicine Hat third baseman Austin Sojka that cashed in Wesley Moss.

Collin Klingensmith, Cameron Pope, and Sal Rodriguez were the only Mavericks to reach base on hits, while Jaymon Cervantes pitched a complete game with just one earned run allowed on five hits.

Red Sox starter Michael Batten threw six and one-third innings of shutout baseball, leaving the game in the seventh inning with just three hits and two walks allowed.

Dropping all three games of their series in the ‘Queen City,’ the Mavericks have fallen to a 9-16 record on the season and have slipped down to fifth place in the WCBL’s Western Division.

Losing four of their last five games, it’s a return to Athletic Park this weekend for the Mavericks as they open another three-game set against the struggling Yorkton Cardinals on Saturday at 7:05 pm.
