MEDICINE HAT, AB — It’s hard not to notice Sage Watson taking the start line, no matter the location.

Put her on the same running track she once tore apart in high school, and it’s as though the Olympian never left.

The world-class 400-meter hurdler got in a few light training sessions at the Rotary Track, while enjoying a short visit with friends and family. She flew back to Arizona on Sunday to resume her usual training regime.

Watson, who also celebrated her 25th birthday in her hometown, is in the beginning stages of her second full campaign as a professional.

She made her outdoor season debut in the IAAF’s Diamon League stop in Rome three weeks ago, finishing seventh with a time of 55.71.

The brunt of Watson’s competitive circuit is still a couple weeks away. The Seven Persons-product plans on racing several times in Europe to prepare for the 2019 Canadian Track and Field Championships in Montreal at the end of July.

From there, she’ll fly straight to Peru to represent Team Canada at the 2019 Pan-American Games in Lima.

Mitch Bach of CHAT Sports caught up with Watson to hear what it’s like to wear the maple leaf on the international stage, the details of her second professional campaign, and how this year’s schedule is engineered towards reaching peak performance for Tokyo 2020.
