Intense lightning part of Thursday night thunderstorm

Jun 14, 2019 | 6:43 AM

MEDICINE HAT — A thunderstorm that brought intense lightning, high wind but little rain hit the city around 9 last night.

It prompted cancellation of the final 4 heats of the first night of the chuckwagon races in the interest of public safety.

The temperature dropped 14 degrees in a few hours, but the storm only produced 1.3 mm of rain measured at the airport.

It’s not known if the storm was responsible, but city police were called to help corral some cattle that were wandering on Gershaw Drive S.W. just after midnight.

About 30 head were herded into a pen at the Medicine Hat Feeding company — no one knows where they came from or how they got out.
