Medicine Hat, AB – In the top 100 grossing films of 2018, just 4 per cent of those were directed by women.
That’s why Girls In Film and Television (GIFT), a non-profit organization, is hosting camps this summer across Alberta to get teenage girls involved with television and film making.
Medicine Hat is one of their stops.
The five day camp will take place at the College, starting on July 22 and will teach girls between the ages of 14-18 everything from writing, shooting, and editing.
Every day the girls, taught by all female instructors, will focus on one of the aspects and use the skills they learn to create their own short films.
Director of operations, Elise Graham, says that when girls get hands on experience, they are more likely to have the confidence to enter the field later on.
“It makes the programming better. In media, the more diversity you have anywhere just makes everything better.” Graham said. “Especially when the media we create, and I’m talking about film, television, creative media, is suppose to be a reflection of our world. And how are you reflecting an accurate representation of our world if there are no women involved.”

Graham says that they do offer two full subsidies for those who identify as indigenous or visible minority.
