Christian School installs solar panels

Medicine Hat, AB – Over the past week, 461 solar panels have been installed on the roof of the Medicine Hat Christian School, with the hopes of becoming self-sufficient and give students a unique look at how going green can help the environment.

The school was inspired to apply for grants for the project after a former parent, working for Terralta, did a presentation about solar power.

Principal Shade Holmes says that the panels will be able to provide all the electrical needs for the school over the year.

As well as helping cut costs, students are getting involved.

This past month, Grade 8 students analyzed the school’s utilities over the last two years to see how the school could be better and the costs that would be saved with solar power.

Holmes says that come fall, they will use solar power in more lessons.

“So there’s the science behind it. There’s the math behind it.” He said. “There’s also being a good environmental steward. So taking care of our Earth. And I find that this next generation, they are really concerned about that and they want to do their part. So solar energy is the way to go.”

Grade 8 student Chance Christmann says he learned quite a bit last month looking at the school’s utilities and is looking forward to learning even more.

“I think it’s important because it provides you a good amount of options to go with. Like you can go with the original or you could go with the alternative.” Christmann continued. “Or you can go an entirely new way. It’s good to get all perspectives so that you know what to do in the future.”
