Senator Gershaw School wins provincial track and field banner

BOW ISLAND, AB — The Senator Gershaw School Gators track team won their first-ever provincial track and field banner this weekend.

The Gators finished with 95 points, defeating EH Walter School by 10 points at the provincial meet which concluded on Friday to win the 1A division banner.

Among members of the team, Karli Haugan made it to the podium with a bronze medal finish in senior women’s discus with a throw of 28.98 metres. She finished 15th in shot put with a 7.59 metre throw.

Nickola Haugan finished in fourth place in senior women’s javelin, throwing it 32.01 metres. She also finished in 7th place in discus with a 27.16 metre throw.

Garren Oosterhuis finished in ninth place in senior men’s hurdles (15.72 seconds) and was also part of the 4×100 relay team, which also finished in ninth place during the event. (48.05 seconds)

Aidyn Phillips took home eighth place in the senior men’s javelin, throwing the javelin 40.84 metres.

Trista Mitchell finished in 12th in intermediate women’s 100m with a time of 14.41 seconds.

Jessica Andreas took home sixth place in the intermediate women’s shot put (10.84 metres) and finished 11th in discus (21.89 metres)

Kayla Phillips had a sixth place finish in junior women’s javelin (27.72 metres).

Finally, Dacey Timmons took home 13th in the junior men’s shot put, throwing the shot 9.86 metres.

According to track coach Andy Phillips, conditions on Friday for the meet were less than ideal, noting athletes had to deal with wind, rain and colder temperatures.

The Gators’ win snaps a nine-year consecutive winning streak by Glendon School.
