Canada sweeps Australia to open weekend at home in Volleyball Nations League

OTTAWA — Canada swept Australia 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-18) to open the second weekend of the five-week pool play stage of Volleyball Nations League on Friday night at TD Place.

Sharone Vernon-Evans of Toronto led Canada with 20 points.

Canada rallied from a 16-14 deficit in the first set as attacking and serving errors from Australia gave the home side the advantage.

The Canadians went up 16-9 in the second set and finished it with an ace by Brett Walsh.

Ryan Sclater ended the match with two kills.

“Australia is very aggressive on their attack and they like to take some very gutsy swings,” said Canada captain Gord Perrin.

“They had us on their heels a little bit to begin with but we were able to save the first set, which was important and we were then able to control the match. There are always things we can do better. We’re still working on our offence to get it a little more crisp, but it’s getting better every weekend, which is great for us.”

Canada faces Germany on Saturday.
