Unemployment rate in Lethbridge-Medicine Hat at 6.5 per cent

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The region’s unemployment rate went up slightly in May compared to April, according to new numbers released by Statistics Canada Friday morning.

The monthly employment report found the unemployment rate for the Lethbridge-Medicine Hat region now sits at 6.5 per cent, up from 6.4 per cent in April.

Last year at this time, the unemployment rate for the region was 5.2 per cent.

The province’s unemployment rate remains unchanged at 6.7 per cent from April. Calgary’s unemployment dropped to 6.8 per cent (7.5 per cent in April), while Edmonton’s 7.0 unemployment rate remains unchanged.

Among other regions in Alberta, the Camrose-Drumheller region, which has the highest unemployment rate in the province, saw its unemployment rate drop in May to 8.9 per cent. In April, the unemployment rate was 9.3 per cent.

The lowest unemployment rate in the province covers Banff, Jasper, Rocky Mountain House, Peace River, Grande Prairie and Athabasca, where it sits at 5.7 per cent.

Across the country, the unemployment rate fell to 5.4 per cent, the lowest rate since 1976. According to Statistics Canada, a total of 27,700 jobs were added in May.
