Canada through to FIBA U16 Americas semifinals with 85-78 win over Mexico

BELEM, Brazil — Canada advanced to the semifinals of the FIBA U16 Americas Championship with a 95-78 win over Mexico on Friday.

With a guaranteed top-four finish at this tournament, Canada also qualifies for the 2020 FIBA U17 World Cup.

Enoch Boakye led Canada with 19 points and 17 rebounds. Ryan Nembhard added 20 points and seven assists while Caleb Houstan had 21 points.

Yahir Bonilla had 27 points for Mexico in the loss.

Canada led by five at halftime but broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Mexico 25-14 behind 10 points from Nembhard.

The Canadians will face the Dominican Republic in one of Saturday’s semifinals, while the other sees the United States against Argentina.
