Canada’s Tiananmen anniversary statement ‘grossly’ offside, envoy complains
OTTAWA — Beijing’s top diplomat to Canada blasted the Trudeau government for “grossly” violating China’s internal affairs Tuesday after a statement singled out his country’s treatment of ethnic Muslim minorities on the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre.
“The Canadian statement made various accusations around China’s political system, human rights and religious situation and baselessly criticized China’s Xinjiang policy,” Ambassador Lu Shaye told The Canadian Press in an interview.
“It grossly interferes in China’s internal affairs, tramples the basic norms governing international relations and undermines neutral trust between China and Canada.”
Lu’s admonishment came as the Liberal government appeared to be walking a fine line between acknowledging the historic massacre and its ongoing effort to win the release of two Canadian men imprisoned in China.
