Funk flawless for Hounds in provincial debut

EDMONTON, AB — One week after he was named the SCAHL’s Goaltender of the Year, Teron Funk of the Medicine Hat AA Midget Hounds proved his place among Alberta’s best.

The 18-year-old was flawless on 48 shots as the Hounds opened the Hockey Alberta Midget AA Provincial Championships with a 5-0 victory over the Calgary CNHA Canucks on Thursday night in Edmonton.

Ryley Manz (2 goals, 1 assist) and Jacob Milne (1 goal, 2 assists) each collected three-point performances, and Brandon Kasdorf notched a goal and a helper. Cameron Hall rounded out the fifth tally for the Hounds, who are coming off a SCAHL League Championship two weeks ago.

Although regarded as the best goaltender in the South Central Alberta Hockey League, Funk’s busy night is uncommon for his usual workload. Medicine Hat is known for its stingy defense, often holding teams to fewer than 20 shots per game. In fact, the Canucks outshot the Hounds 48-35 through the contest.

Three of the Hounds five goals came in the opening period, including the eventual game-winner by Manz just 32 seconds in.

CHAT Sports caught up with Funk prior to the team’s departure to Edmonton for provincials to hear more about his league award, and how he’s maintained his strong numbers through the entire campaign.

Plus, head coach Randy Wong discusses Funk’s worth-ethic, and how the team is gelling as they begin their quest for provincial gold.
