Indoor skateboarding program helping kids stay active during the cold of winter

Young skateboarders are getting their exercise indoors the during a cold spell outside with the SkateSkool program.

The Medicine Hat Skateboard Association (MHSA) has taken the program indoors for the first time. Kids as young as the age of five have gone out to the indoor skate park in The Summit Center to learn how to skate.

Organizer and Volunteer Instructor Colton Steinkey says the program has been a big success so far.

“We were overwhelmed, lots of kids ended up keep coming out and the results are amazing,” said Steinkey.

SkateSkool is in the middle of it’s six week program. Classes are run every Tuesday and Sunday. Even though the skaters take a lot of falls, Steinkey says they’re always excited to get back up and try again.

“They’re all pretty hyped up, they keep coming out to skate,” said Steinkey, who has seen many kids learn how to ride, “there’s lots of kids that didn’t even know how to push and we’ve got kids pushing now.”

This isn’t the first SkateSkool, but it is the first time the program has ran inside during the winter months

Joshua Jessop, another instructor at SkateSkool, says keeping kids active while it’s too cold outside is a top priority for him.

“Having it in the wintertime, it opens up way more opportunities for kids to learn, be involved and be active throughout the wintertime,” said Jessop, “Not every parent wants to spend the amount of money to travel to a snow hill or a resort to go skiing or snowboarding.”

For most kids, they’re still learning the basics. While riding down the steep angle of a quarter-pipe canbe scary, Jessop says overcoming fears is something they encourage in the program.

“If they get scared and they never go outside their comfort zone to accomplish stuff then they’re not gonna learn as well,” said Jessop.

Outdoor classes are planned to start in May. For more information on SkateSkool you can visit the Associations Facebook page.
