Fifth avenue church named municipal historic resource

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Fifth Avenue Memorial Church has officially been designated as a municipal historic resource.

City Council voted unanimously to pass the designation following approval from the structures owners.

The church located at 476 4 Street SE was first built in 1913, and re-built following a devastating fire in 1931. It was initially named Fifth Avenue Methodist church, re-named to Fifth Avenue United Church in 1925, and finally changed to Fifth Avenue Memorial Church in 1988.

The structure was designed by William T. Williams, featuring formal massing, crenellated towers, exposed rafter tails, and stain glass windows.

The designation was spearheaded by the Heritage Resources Committee, who says the church has been an essential part of Medicine Hat’s religious community for more than a century.

Mayor Ted Clugston says the committee does an incredible amount for the community.

“That committee does so much work,” says Mayor Ted Clugston you just think of all the buildings that were lost before we had a committee like this or knocked down.”

The designation of the church as a Municipal Historic Resources means no one is allowed to destroy, disturb, alter or repair any part of the buildings exterior.

Areas that can still be altered include all interior features, the 1957 Christian education addition and all landscaping.

The re-designation came into affect as soon as the decision was made.
