BEAUMONT, AB — Alberta will welcome its 19th city on January 1.

Beaumont has officially received a city designation by the province on Thursday, following an announcement by Shaye Anderson, the Minister of Municipal Affairs.

“I’m proud to be a part of Beaumont’s vibrant community and to witness its evolution into a thriving city,” said Anderson, who represents the riding of Leduc-Beaumont, in a news release. “Beaumont’s community spirit, its resources, and rich heritage have so much to offer to the Edmonton Metropolitan Region and Alberta.”

“Today’s historic announcement is a momentous milestone for our community,” said Beaumont Mayor John Stewart in a news release. “It provides us with opportunities to attract new residents, businesses, and investment to diversify our tax base and gain more recognition provincially for our community.”

Beaumont has a population of 18,320, almost doubled from 10 years ago, according to the town’s municipal census report. The release sees the town praising its arts and culture scene, safe and friendly neighbourhoods, and its Francophone population as helping the community grow into a city.

A formal celebration of Beaumont’s city status will take place in May.
